The Firefly Cancer Awareness and Support
Firefly is about life – living it to the full, and enjoying every second of it. We want to remove the stigma and embarrassment of personal cancer problems in young men and women, giving them the confidence to communicate with friends, family and health professionals should the occasion arise. Founded in 2006 by Denise Dunn after her personal experience with cancer, Firefly help local people in their time of need, making a difficult time a little easier. Firefly is now run by Dee’s fiancé Chewy Bacchus and close family friend Paul Taylor after Dee passed away in 2014, with a promise to Dee to keep her legacy running.
The Firefly Express vehicles provide free transport to local cancer patients and their families in the borough of Doncaster to regional treatment hospitals, using our fantastic team of volunteer drivers. We currently have a fleet of eight vehicles to cope with the ever-increasing requirements.
Using our personal experiences, we are determined to change the journey for cancer patients while raising awareness, particularly amongst young people, to spot the signs before it advances.
Mission
Our Firefly Express vehicles provide a free shuttle transport service for local people in the borough of Doncaster who are undergoing cancer treatments at regional cancer centres. Firefly 1 was donated by Fil Adams-Mercer through Channel 4’s Secret Millionaire to ease the psychological, physical and financial stress faced by patients and their families.
We were able to purchase Firefly 2 in 2012, made possible by the Diamond Jubilee grant given to Firefly by the West Yorkshire Freemasons. Firefly 3 was donated by One Call Insurance. That was followed by Firefly 4 and Firefly 5, made possible due to money raised by holding the Equinox Ball.
Thanks to some fantastic donations and fundraising events, we now have a fleet of vehicles used to transport cancer patients to regional treatment hospitals, driven by our incredible team of volunteer drivers. Every penny we raise goes back into Firefly to make sure the wheels keep on turning.
